In this section, we find striking equipment for training in martial arts and contact sports that help us improve our skills and physical condition. Let's analyze the different types of striking equipment.
- First, we have MUAY THAI PADS. This equipment is specific for training technique and power in Muay Thai or other contact sports. They are elongated and cover the entire forearm. You can practice punches and kicks at full power and combine them with boxing mitts to work on strike combinations. The goal is to improve your technique, strength, and endurance.
The most commonly used are:
- Striking shields for martial arts training: These are the most traditional, large-sized shields on which you can work on all types of kicks and punches. The most typical shape is rectangular, although you can also find circular ones. The person holding the shield can position it either frontally or laterally, depending on the exercise you want to work on.
- Round striking shields (governadora): The use is similar to striking shields, but the shape is round, and the weight is lighter. It is easier to control and handle.
- Arm shields: These are worn on the partner’s arms. They are secured with Velcro straps and a final hand grip. You can work on both punches and kicks, making it a more precise exercise since the equipment is smaller than a shield.
- Iranian striking shield: Curved and specific for training Taekwondo.
All of these items have a set of common characteristics:
- Made of leather or quality synthetic material: This is the perfect material to withstand the power of the striker. If made of synthetic leather or another type of material, make sure it is of good quality.
- Grips and straps: These should be optimal and of good quality. If the Velcro straps are of poor quality, they won’t stick after two or three uses, and you’ll have an uncomfortable pad that moves around. It should be adjustable to be used by both children and adults.
Another important piece of striking equipment is boxing mitts, which are very versatile for exercises focused on precision, speed, and strike coordination. Usually, the trainer or coach wears them, and the athlete strikes them with the goal of performing exercises. They are not only used in contact sports but also in martial arts.
Depending on the type of training, exercises with boxing mitts are aimed at improving offense, but you can also work on defense by trying to avoid (dodging or feinting) the punches thrown with them. You can chain punches together based on your level: if you're a beginner, you can start with a sequence of two or three punches. If you're at an intermediate level, the sequence might include three or four punches, and if you're in competition or a professional, you can perform long combinations, incorporating attacks, defenses, and dodges.
With boxing mitts, you can work not only on straight punches but also hooks and crosses. Just like choosing your boxing gloves, you can also choose the right mitts for the type of training you want to perform and improve your workouts:
- Flat boxing mitts: These stay completely flat when you place your hands inside, and depending on how you hold them, you can receive straight or circular punches from both fists and feet.
- Curved boxing mitts: These have a grip that curves the hand when you place it inside. They are used to perfect the boxer’s strikes and are recommended for more experienced students.
- Mini boxing mitts: Designed for working on speed.
Most boxing mitts are made of leather, which provides a more realistic striking sensation.
